phu xa temple |
|
Located in Dong Hai commune, An Hai district, 8 km from the city centre, Phu Xa
Temple was built as a memorial to the merits of Hung Dao Vuong Tran
Quoc Tuan, an indomitable, talented and whole-hearted man as alive,
and a "saint" as dead, always respected by the local people.
It has been said by the local residents that it is in this area that
Mr Tran Quoc Tuan had many warehouses of foodstuffs built in
preparation for Bach Dang movement in 1288. It was also in this
place that a feast was given to the soldiers before their march to
Van Kiep.
The present foundation of the old temple is also a place for the
cult of local lady named Bui Thi Tu Nhien, who was in charge of
supplying provisions to the Tran’s army.
It has also been reported that after the victory over foreign
invaders, Ms. Bui Thi Tu Nhien helped the villagers with their
production and construction. Phu Xa village at first had its name as
Phu Luong, but in Tu Duc dynasty (1848 – 1882) it was renamed Phu Xa
in order to avoid the coincidence of Ms. Nhien’s husband’s name. The
small thatched shrine in its early days has now become a massive
I-shaped architectural monument surrounded by a wall, with carving
and painting decorations deeply reflecting the Nguyen dynasty style
of the end of the 19th century and the early 20th.
Traditionally, the 8th month of lunar calendar year is the time to
celebrate our Father and the 3rd month of lunar calendar year to
celebrate our Mother (as Mr Tran Hung Dao was considered as the
people’s Father, celebration of his death anniversary takes place on
the 20th of the 8th month every year). During this time Phu Xa
Temple is busy with people coming for the festivals, with the noise
of drums and the colours of flags.
This temple has been recognised by the government as a national
cultural-historical heritage. |
